Mindhunter – John Douglas & Mark Olshaker – #20booksofsummer

So close! This is my 9th book of 10 in the 10booksofsummer challenge hosted by Cathy at 746books.

Blurb:
John Douglas is a former FBI Special Agent and expert in criminal profiling and behavioural science. He made a career of looking evil in the eye – and understanding it. No wonder that he was the inspiration for Special Agent Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, as well as the film’s consultant on the reality of serial killers.

Douglas invented and established the practice of criminal profiling, and submerged himself in the world of serial killers in a quest to understand why they killed, and to help prevent more innocent lives from being ended by future killers. As his serial crime unit developed from a derided two-bit operation in a dingy officer to one of the FBI’s elite task forces, Douglas personally confronted the most terrible crimes of the age, including those of Jeffrey Dahmer, Charles Manson, Ted Bundy and the Atlanta child murderer.

With the fierce page-turning power of a bestselling novel, yet terrifyingly true, Mindhunter is a true crime classic.

My Thoughts
Anyone who knows me knows that I love true crime because I just can’t fathom how anyone could do any of these things. That’s why this book was perfect for me.

This book follows how John Douglas and his colleagues set up the Behavioural Analysis Unit at the FBI or the Investigative Support Unit. I found it absolutely fascinating how these men and women in the unit look at crime scene photos and deduce what kind of character the killer is, be it organized, disorganized, high IQ or low IQ.

I don’t even know how to review this book because of how in depth it is and it involves people’s lives. But this book gives a really good insight into how the 80’s FBI worked and how they would catch evil people.

I would highly recommend this book to any murderinos or anyone interested in true crime.

  1. Unfortunately, I already watched the Netflix series based on the book. I prefer books to tv/movie adaptations so it’s too bad that I missed reading first. I bet this book is excellent. (I did like the series)

    Thanks!

  2. I love love love the show Mindhunter! I’m a sucker for true crime and couldn’t wait to watch seasons one and two of the show. I really love to see how the psychology of hunting serial killers began and evolved and learning about so many infamous criminals along the way. I will have to check out the book!
