In The Dream House – Carmen Maria Machado

Blurb:
For years Carmen Maria Machado has struggled to articulate her experiences in an abusive same-sex relationship. In this extraordinarily candid and radically inventive memoir, Machado tackles a dark and difficult subject with with, inventiveness and an inquiring spirit, as she uses a series of narrative tropes—including classic horror themes—to create an entirely unique piece of work which is destined to become an instant classic.

My Thoughts:
This book really is something else. I was honestly scared of how quickly things escalated to full-on abuse and manipulation by the woman.

The way Carmen Maria Machado used ‘Dream House’ in different forms at the start of each chapter is so interesting and she uses different ways to describe what was going on and how bad things got as they progressed their relationship.

I’m ashamed to say that I never really was aware of abuse in FF relationships, I knew that they receive abuse from people outside of the relationship because of their closed-mindedness but domestic abuse was not something I was aware of.

I’m so glad that Machado included some of the histories of FF domestic abuse cases, but I’m so angry about how little interest there is, and also how it generally wasn’t taken seriously at all.
This book is definitely a must-read for everyone!
