Blurb:
Five New Yorkers must come together in order to defend their city in the first book of a stunning new series by Hugo award-winning and NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin.
Every city has a soul. Some are as ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York City? She’s got five.
But every city also has a dark side. A roiling, ancient evil stirs beneath the earth, threatening to destroy the city and her five protectors unless they can come together and stop it once and for all.
My Thoughts:
In this book, we follow as 5 of the New York boroughs are born into human manifestations and 1 into the heart of New York. These manifestations have to defend New York as evil is trying to overtake it and make New York it’s own.
I enjoyed this book, it was very different from what I usually read, but it did take me a bit to get into it and used to what was going on. I had to physically read the first few chapters, before going back to the audiobook, just so that I could my head around what was happening and getting used to the characters.

I really enjoyed the concept of boroughs being manifested into people and the people have to look after their own cities. It was really interesting that they were all strangers and they had to find each other so that they could work together because there was no way that they could have taken on the evil entity single-handedly.
I think the audiobook was a really great experience because it was a dramatisation and they put in sound effects and different voices which was really an amazing addition.
Ooh what an interesting premise – this certainly isn’t something I’ve come across before. Sounds like it was good once you got into the flow of it?
