Happy New Year Everyone!
Here’s to an amazing year!
Blurb:
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol – a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.
Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest that she’s afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she’s not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol’s cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can’t prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying. Katniss is about to be tested as never before.
My Thoughts:
Second in the series and I’m still sure everyone knows about this one as well as the first one.
I noticed that when I was listening to this that there was a lot more emphasis on the lead up to the games rather than the games themselves, which I do understand because this book has more to do with rebellion rather than introducing the audience to what the hunger games is about.
There was a lot of detail about the winners tour which I appreciated and the emotions of visiting District 11 where Rue had come from, that part was so emotional both in the book and in the film. I thought it was done really well. I also really enjoyed Effie Trinket in this book because of how she’s becoming more than just a jolly, happy person. You can see that there is actually emotions in her, I loved that she got each of them a token, because of their bond and they are a team.

I did find that Katniss is really quite selfish in the book, and she does generally think about herself first rather than thinking about Peeta or Haymitch as they are going through the same emotions as her. Yes ok it was guaranteed that she would be going back to the games and there was at least an option between Peeta and Haymitch.
In the film version I was glad that we got to go between the Capital and Katniss because it shows what’s going on everywhere. But I did feel like there could have been more. I know it’s a lot harder to put more in films because of time restraints but I felt like I was missing stuff and that if you have only watched the films then you are missing details. I did however, find that Katniss was less selfish in the film.
You’ve written a great review without giving too much away. I was never really interested in The Hunger Games before but now I’m starting to think its a series I need to read.

Great review – for me I’ve always had mixed feelings regarding the Hunger Games as I personally would have preferred it to be a standalone novel rather than a trilogy.

That’s fair, I can understand that feeling!

Great review! I like that you compared the book and the film, and I agree that Katniss could be a bit self-absorbed

Wow this was such a throwback to when I was in school- everyone was obsessed with this series! I think I read the first one, and watched the others at the cinema. They weren’t really my thing but they were super popular! Thank you for sharing x
