Ketchup Clouds – Annabel Pitcher – Bookrush 6

Blurb:
Fifteen-year-old Zoe has a secret – a dark and terrible secret that she can’t confess to anyone she knows. But then one day she hears of a criminal, Stuart Harris, locked up on death row in Texas. Like Zoe, Stuart is no stranger to secrets. Or lies. Or murder.

Full of both heartache and humour, Zoe tells her story in the only way she can – in letters to the man in prison in America. Armed with a pen, Zoe takes a deep breath, eats a jam sandwich, and begins her tale of love and betrayal.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book and I’m frustrated with myself for taking so long to pick it up. I thought it was really well written and an incredible story.

This book follows a year in the life of Zoe, we see how things have unfolded and what happened leading up to the night which left her guilt ridden. The whole format of the book is written in letters to a death row inmate in Texas whoo she believes will understand where she is coming from and understand her guilt.

I really liked Zoe as a character but I found myself getting frustrated at situations which could have been prevented and I found myself asking ‘Why are you doing thiiiiis?’ But as they are teenagers I can understand. I loved the connections she has with her sisters I found that really special.

I loved how we jumped back and forth between the past year and the current year and how Zoe explains what is currently happening and what has happened leading up to the present. I throughly enjoyed this book.

      1. I didn’t want to mention it on Twitter, but the writer’s husband also teaches at our school. Every time he mentions ‘Annabel’ I have to stop myself asking stupid questions about what she’s working on!

  1. I love that you said you found yourself asking the characters “why are you doing this?” I do the exact same thing. Of course, if they made only good decisions all of the time it wouldn’t be much of a book. Thanks for the recommendation.
