This was one of my favourite books of 2016. Stoner follows the life of a man called William Stoner. (I know it doesn’t sound interesting but oh my gosh I’ve never realised how the mundaine life of one person can really affect me in such a profound way).
Stoner begins his life on a farm in Missouri and then under his fathers instructions goes off to university to take an agricultural course where he can develop his skills on the farm. He soon realises that farming is not the path he should take. He takes up a class in literature where he falls in love with the subject and all manners of authors. During his second year at university he drops his agricultural studies and delvs deeper into the world of literature.
The book follows Stoner on his path as a student then a professor. It follows his love life, his love of a younger girl, soon to become his wife, and then onto a student of his who he finds fascinating and irresistable.
He of course has troubles in his life, his wife, his colleagues and his students. Despite the issues he has in his life his love for his daughter remains strong and untouched.
This book is only short at around 200 pages however it gripped me at my core and I was unable to put the book down, I would take it with me where ever I was going and couldn’t wait to find out what was happening next in Stoners life.
In a way I wanted the book to be longer so as I could know more about Stoner, but on the other hand I found that the length of the book was perfect. It had the right amount of description and soul in it to captivate the reader.
John Williams was able to capture so many emotions in such a short time. Once I had finished reading it I just had to sit there and think about life and what it meant. I passed the book onto my mum who then also fell in love with the writing and the story herself.
Honestly and wholeheartedly I reccommend this book!
